Thesis has swallowed my life.
It doesn't know I'm posting here... I have to keep it secret...it's lurking in another window, if I'm not back soon it'll realise I'm gone...

Today Ipicked up dog poop for the first time.
That is all.
That is all.
Interesting...
I'd tell myself that I was beautiful.
That everyone was right when they said high school sucks but university would be awesome.
That exercise is fun, and one day I would come to appreciate this fact.
That there would be bad times, but if I persevered and didn't give in to despair I would acheive my dreams.
That no matter how annoying my sister was or how bossy and mean my mum was, one day they would be my best friends.
That my mum would find love again.
That I would look awesome in a corset.

I went to see it on the weekend with the Boy, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Here's my question though: did they actually motion capture Billy Crudup's (Dr Manhatten) penis?? I mean, actually attach the electrodes and everything. Or did they just CGI it in, given that it doesn't really do much except hang there.
A sex scene is one thing, but how many actors would actually be happy to have their penis individually mo-capped...

Oh, realist definitely. Some might think I am more pessimist, but only when I disagree with their rose-coloured version of the world. I actually think I tend towards optimism, but with a healthy dose of cynicism and a pragmatic approach to life.

Oh, and because I haven't done it yet:
Copy this sentence into your livejournal if you're in a heterosexual marriage/relationship (or if you think you might be someday), and you don't want it "protected" by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow.
Obama won!
I wasn't really following the election closely and I'm not too interested in politics in general, but it was pretty clear that McCain was not going to be a good choice. I disagree with a lot of the fundamentalist religious crap that Republicans care about - like banning abortion and all that.
Should be an interesting four years...

This was sent to me by my brother, it's a very interesting interview with a guy called Andrew Bacevich, an expert in Internation Relations. He talks about his recent book "The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism". It's very good and very interesting, whether you agree with it or not. I'm not normally much into politics, but it's definitely worth a look.
One of the things that struck me was that he's saying a lot of things that seem pretty obvious but are apparently completely new to Americans. Like that the Iraq war is all about oil...
His main point is really that the aim of the American government is basically to give the people what they want. And what they want is to continue living in the style to which they are accustomed - the 'American way of life', which is incompromisable, and essentially consumerist in nature. This is what dictates America's foreign policy.
All of this is essentially stuff we, the non-Americans of the world, have already figured out. But to them it's revolutionary!
The mind boggles.
Although, as an idle aside, it's probably true of most governments - they're all set up to give someone what they want, whether it's one, a few or a lot of people. The problem lies in what that desire actually is, and whether or not people acknowledge that this is the purpose of any ruling body.
I want to mention that I am neither for nor against America in general. But I find them interesting as a society (helps that they're very much on the public stage and reasonably far away that I can watch them with something approaching objectivity).

It's been out long enough that I'm not going to bother about spoilers
Tarzan moment, WTF?
Also, monkeys!
And I love how they manage to go on a high speed chase through the JUNGLE! Obviously, well-made roads have been prepared in advance by the Nazis. I mean, Russians...
And how it takes Indy 5 secs to read the letter from Oxley (even though he says he'll have to translate it to Mayan first).
Surviving a direct nuclear blast in a FRIDGE??? Priceless.
And Cate Blanchette keeps failing her Russian accent every time she says 'Jones' or 'know'
Oh, and of course the appearance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, legendary car-boat-plane and fun four-fendered friend! Recently brought out of retirement for a staring role as the car that is somehow also a boat. Seriously, WTF???
Pretty good finale though, in a cheesy but spectacular Indiana Jones way. I liked the nod to Lost Ark at the beginning.

I know I'm a week late, but I just found out about this and I think it deserves a mention.
Arthur C Clarke has died
I read a lot of science fiction growing up, mainly due to the influence of my brothers (who probably got it from my Dad). We had the greats: Clarke, Asimov, Heinlein, Lem...
When we left home and started collecting our own libraries, first on the list was scifi.
vandervecken even went on to do a PhD in astrophysics. Those books were inspiring, they were well-written, they were entertaining.
Even now I still enjoy reading them, and I still find new ones.
RIP Arthur

Just got back from Rock2Wgtn. I am blown away. Kiss were fantastic, Lordi rocks, Alice Cooper is amazing...
I'll try and do justice to it in a real post tomorrow, if that's actually possible.

I held a living heart in my hand today. It was the most beautiful and awe-inspiring thing I've ever seen.
The perfect unity of form and function, the symmetrical asymmetry, the incredible sense of life! Amazing! Nothing is more alive than a beating heart.
It was strangely calming to hold it, almost like petting a kitten. It was warm, and smooth to the touch and the rhythm of its beating was comforting and wonderfully life-affirming. Uniformly, regularly, with perfect timing, adjusting itself intrinsically to any needs. On and on, every second, from the moment you're born until the moment you die.
I feel unbelievably privileged to have witnessed it, to have been allowed into this most sacred of spaces, to see what a lucky few have seen.
